What is a toll free number?

A lot of misconceptions exist about toll free numbers:

  • They are not free.- The caller isn't billed, the called party pays.
  • 800 Is not the only toll free area code. - Area codes 888, 877, and 866 are also toll free.
  • The carrier doesn't own the number. - If you are paying the carrier for it, and want to switch carriers, you can take your number with you to the other carrier, it's called "800 number portability". However if you have a PIN (personal identification number) associated with the toll free number, that number isn't yours, it belongs to the carrier.

When you get a toll free number, the carrier will send the calls to a local number that you specify. You can send it to any telephone number you wish, either in your home, business, or other place like a voice mail number that has been assigned to you.

If you already have a toll free number, you can instruct the carrier to send it to a different number. You can change to a different carrier if you find a better price, that was one of the reasons for the "800 number portability" to create competition in the toll free market.

How do I get a toll free number ?

Toll free numbers are available from long distance communications companies. AT&T, MCI, and Sprint are the major long distance companies. Other companies can also provide them, and there is a wide difference in prices.

Charges fall into 3 categories install, monthly and per minute usage charges. Compare them when you shop around.

Once you've found the company to get your toll free number from, they will ask you "where would you like those calls to go?" You can send them to any 10 digit telephone number you like. The toll free number then "translates" to a local number, and the company you've selected will collect accounting call detail on every call to "your toll free" number, and send you a bill once a month.

Golden Voice is an agent for a long distance companies, and can provide you with a toll free number as well.

How can you be in so many states?

Some of our clients are surprised, and we will admit that we are too. The phone keeps ringing, and it seems that we can no longer "assume" that the caller is a local person.

With the development of the Internet, and low costs on long distance and toll free calling, your market is what you want it to be.

Our numbers that we provide Just-A-Minute and Golden Mailbox voice mail on are local to Golden Colorado, other local numbers in other cities are available with our Q5mail, Q10mail, Q20mail, VMail and VMail+ products.  These can be accessed from telephones worldwide, useful worldwide, therefore why not market worldwide.

I don't have to fish in my back yard anymore for clients, and neither do you..... The world is our marketplace.

If you are use a toll free number, does it matter where your voice mail is located?  Especially with low rates of 3.9 ¢ per minute!

What if I don't need or want a toll free number?

If you don't want one, you don't have to have one. Some of our clients use the local number that we assign them, and never get a toll free number. They have various reasons to have a local number that collects messages for them.

Also, you may have a voice mail company that is local to your area that provides all the features that you require. Use our rates for Q5mail, Q10mail, Q20mail, VMail and VMail+ to compare to theirs, we try to have competitive prices.  If you don't need to pay for toll charges or 800 charges, then why do it.

What is the difference between a answering machine and voice mail?

Answering machines and voice mail though similar, function quite differently. Part of the reason is their location in relation to the caller, and you.

Stand-alone voice mail is outside the direct call path. Ready to answer at any time the caller if the caller would have

  • a busy signal
  • a ring no answer after "x" times
  • interrupted your call with a "message waiting" beep

Answering machines, just aren't able to capture the callers because if your line is busy, no-one can record a message on your answering machine.

A single voice mail number can be used for "all" your calls, home, business, cellular, pcs or directly without ever even having a telephone number. Using voice mail as a common collection point, for all your messages.

What is a fully featured mailbox?

Voice mail systems have developed to the point that when one company design's a "new" feature that is useful, all of the other companies follow suit. A fully featured mailbox then basically says that all of the features are included. The specific feature you want may not be available in all systems, but if it is available, "can you use it?" - "what does it cost to use it?"

What can I do with it?

The Golden Mailbox has the ability to play a greeting, and take a message. It can also have or own other type box's, announcebox and menubox.

These other box's also can play greetings, and the menubox can listen for touch-tone digits to be entered by the caller. The caller can then be routed to another box either because they selected it, or if they make no selection at all.

Telephone numbers can be assigned to any box type.

Therefore, you can build with these basic box's the type system you want. Think of them as blocks that you can stack together and record different things into each box, give the caller some choices, and take a message, in one or more different Golden Mailbox's.  You could also think of it as audio web pages, with the touch tones as links to your other pages.

We have helped many people design their own system, and almost all have their own unique way that they would like their calls to be handled. The standard is.... there isn't one, you tell us what you want, and we will build it for you.

This is more like modeling clay, we can put it together the way you want, and if you find it isn't quite right, we can modify or totally re-design your entire service.

How do I get your voice mail on my telephone number?

Order a feature "call forwarding busy no answer" from your local telephone company. Cellular and PCS companies have similar forwarding features.

They will need to know where to send your calls if your line is busy or not answered, and you just give them the number that we assign you. Cellular companies turn on the feature, and tell you how to program your phone to activate it or de-activate it. This feature isn't available in all areas, and other options would need to be explored.
